I would love to bring home\u00a0a local catch, but for the ones we enjoyed Sunday night, I\u00a0had\u00a0to travel to Spain (by way of l<a href=\"http:\/\/lobsterplace.com\/products\/polipetti\">obster Place<\/a>) once\u00a0again.<\/p>\n<p>While these baby\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">cephalopods\u00a0came from Iberia,\u00a0<em>polipetti <\/em>is in fact very Italian, <\/span>and virtually everything about this meal was also Italian, in fact\u00a0<em>southern<\/em> Italian (and much of it really was\u00a0<em>from<\/em> Italy): the cheese, the various tomatoes, the bread, the basil,\u00a0the olive oil, the oregano (fresh and dried), the lemon, the dried chilis,\u00a0the eggplant, the mint, and the dinner wine itself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9509\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/eggplant_platter.jpg\" alt=\"eggplant_platter\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9501\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/eggplant_Prosperosa.jpg\" alt=\"eggplant_Prosperosa\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I prepared the grilled heirloom eggplant and cherry tomatoes\u00a0ahead of time, even prior to assembling the\u00a0the first course,\u00a0serving both\u00a0at room temperature, in Italian tradition, after arranging them on this platter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The meal actually began with an\u00a0<em>insalata Caprese<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9507\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/tomato_Caprese.jpg\" alt=\"tomato_Caprese\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>one red and\u00a0one\u00a0orange\u00a0heirloom tomato from Berried Treasures Farm, sliced into bit-size pieces, arranged on 2 plates, bits of Italian\u00a0<em>Mozzarella di Bufala Campania<\/em>\u00a0from Buon Italia\u00a0tucked in between the slices, drizzled with a Campania olive oil,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frantoiogargiulo.com\/it\/shop\/olio-oliva-dop-sorrento\/olio-di-oliva-dop_penisola_sorrentina-_-2014-01-28-2014-01-28-detail.html\">Syrenum D.O.P. Peninsula Sorrentina<\/a>, sprinkled with Maldon salt and coarsely-ground Tellicherry pepper, torn leaves of basil from Lucky Dog Organic Farm sprinkled on top<\/li>\n<li>the bread was &#8216;Sesamo&#8217;, from Sullivan Street Bakery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second course was incredibly simple, because the vegetable had already been prepared and the octopus had only to be removed from a marinade begun in\u00a0leisure 3 hours earlier, then\u00a0placed on a grill pan for a few minutes before being finished\u00a0with lemon, oregano, and oil.<\/p>\n<p>This gorgeous eggplant,\u00a0a variety totally new to me, was incredibly delicious, and really juicy (since I&#8217;m talking about eggplant, I&#8217;ll add, &#8220;jucy in the very best way&#8221;).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>four baby octopus (a total of\u00a0about 12 ounces)\u00a0from Lobster place, marinated in the refrigerator, covered, for 3 hours (although as little as one hour would be acceptable) in a mixture of 1\/4 cup olive oil; one teaspoon of dried Italian oregano\u00a0from the Madonie Mountains in Sicily; the zest and juice of half of a lemon; 1\/4 teaspoon of\u00a0crushed dried Sicilian <em>peperoncino<\/em> from Buon Italia; 1 1\/2 teaspoons of salt; and 2 finely-chopped small garlic cloves from Willow Wisp Farm, the octopus removed from the mix and brought to room temperature, pan-grilled on high heat for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on size, on each &#8216;side&#8217; (that is, in the case of this creature, mouth\/beak down, then lying down on a side), served drizzled with olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and chopped <em>fresh<\/em> oregano from Stokes Farm<\/li>\n<li>one round Italian heirloom eggplant, \u2018<em>Prosperosa<\/em>\u2019, from Franca at\u00a0Berried Treasures\u00a0Farm, sliced into 1\/2-inch rounds, brushed with a mixture of olive oil, finely-chopped garlic from Willow Wisp Farm, chopped peppermint\u00a0leaves from Stokes Farm, salt, and pepper, the slices pan-grilled, turning once,\u00a0and just before they were done, joined by 16 of\u00a0\u2018The Best Cherry Tomatoes\u2019 from Stokes Farm, the eggplant and the tomatoes\u00a0arranged on an oval platter, garnished with mint leaves (although, admittedly, &#8216;garnishing&#8217; is not an\u00a0<em>Italian<\/em> gesture at all) and kept at room temperature until the octopus had been cooked<\/li>\n<li>the wine was an Italian (Campania) white,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.feudi.it\/vini\/falanghina\/\">Falanghina Feudi di San Gregorio 2014<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the music was from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkivmusic.com\/classical\/album.jsp?album_id=1673338\">the album, &#8216;Comedie et Tragedie &#8211; Lully, Marais, Rebel&#8217; <\/a>(early 18th-century music by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Jean-F\u00e9ry Rebel, and Marin Marais, performances by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tempestadimare.org\/\">Tempesta di Mare<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know that the pleasure\u00a0of eating octopus, to say nothing of an interest in preparing it, isn&#8217;t something many people share with me, but I&#8217;m both really\u00a0fond of the taste,\u00a0and\u00a0continually\u00a0excited about how incredibly easy it is to prepare.
