I began assembling it in my head by\u00a0thinking of all the tomatoes I had on the window sill, plus\u00a0the small sweet peppers and cucumbers in the crisper, and I\u00a0weighed\u00a0the hypothetical &#8216;expiration dates&#8217; of each vegetable. In the end, because\u00a0I actually\u00a0had <em>2<\/em> kinds of cucumbers (one the\u00a0gift of a farmer friend), and because I decided the peppers and tomatoes\u00a0could all hold on a little longer,\u00a0<em>cucumis sativus\u00a0<\/em>won the toss.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9239\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/cucumbers_Persian-1.jpg\" alt=\"cucumbers_Persian\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I almost included a\u00a0few of the little peppers, or one\u00a0tomato or more (heirloom or cherry), but went\u00a0the more minimal route, trusting in the\u00a0drawing power\u00a0of a good\u00a0cucumber combined\u00a0with a few good\u00a0herbs and spices.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the pasta dish was entirely improvised.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>two sliced garlic cloves from Norwich Meadows Farm saut\u00e9ed in a large, enameled cast iron pan in a little olive oil until beginning to become pungent, a tablespoon or so of dried fennel added, stirred, allowed to heat for a minute, 2 sliced red scallions from Hawthorne Valley introduced and stirred, saut\u00e9ed until they had softened, some crushed dried Sicilian pepperoncino from Buon Italia added and also stirred in, 2 handfuls of half inch-slices of small Persian cucumbers, already saut\u00e9ed in another pan (large, black cast iron) until thy had begun to brown, tossed in and mixed with the other ingredients in the large pan, 9\u00a0ounces of a Rigatoni (made with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foragersmarket.com\/pantry-recipes-rigatoni-sun-kissed-tomatoes\/\">an organic hard durum whole wheat, \u2018Senatore Cappelli\u2019<\/a>)\u00a0from Foragers Market which had been cooked <em>al dente<\/em>, tossed in and stirred, some chopped dill from Keith&#8217;s Farm tossed in, everything\u00a0mixed and divided into 2 bowls (there was more than enough for a second helping for each of us), tossed with homemade saut\u00e9ed breadcrumbs which had been ground up\u00a0from the heels of a variety of great breads, sprinkled with\u00a0purple radish micro greens from Two Guys from Woodbridge<\/li>\n<li>the wine was an Oregon (Willamette) white, <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.unionwinecompany.com\/products\/2012-kings-ridge-pinot-gris\">Kings Ridge Pinot Gris 2014<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There was a dessert, also improvised, but requiring almost no decisions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9234\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/melon_figs.jpg\" alt=\"melon_figs\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9237\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/snow_leopard_melon-1.jpg\" alt=\"snow_leopard_melon\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>half of a\u00a0small Snow Leopard melon (a small\u00a0honeydew variety, with firmer flesh) from Norwich Meadows Farm, along with halved black California figs from Whole Foods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the music throughout the meal was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkivmusic.com\/classical\/album.jsp?album_id=1344167\">sinfonias by\u00a0Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (and one overture by his father, Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by\u00a0Hartmut Haenchen \u00a0conducting the\u00a0C.P.E.
