On Monday however P.E. &amp; D. D. Seafood had some that appeared\u00a0larger than any I had seen since last fall, so I scooped up a few for this dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Along with them we enjoyed the very last of the\u00a0cultivated upland cress I had brought home\u00a0from Alewife Farm a few days before; I was also very happy to have some local (well, at least local northeastern New England) tomatoes on the windowsill, and I was almost shocked to find that\u00a0Lani&#8217;s Farm was back in the Greenmarket in full force on Monday, or at least in force sufficient to be able to offer what I have to believe was the first broccoli rabe of the season (even if I know it was managed\u00a0with\u00a0the help\u00a0of a &#8216;high tunnel&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, sharp eyes will notice, from the evidence in the picture above, that [like my Mother] I don&#8217;t wear my ring while cooking.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>medium-size sea scallops from P.E. &amp; D.D. Seafood, washed, rinsed and, ideally, very thoroughly dried (I may not have been so thorough this time, since the grill marks are faint), seasoned with salt and pepper, pan grilled for about 90 seconds on each side, finished with a squeeze of Lisbon\u00a0lemon juice from Fantastic Gardens of Long Island, and a drizzle of\u00a0olive oil, then\u00a0scattered with the last of the cultivated upland cress\u00a0from Alewife Farm we had already enjoyed in several meals [the basic recipe for this entr\u00e9e, minus the cress,\u00a0is included in Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers\u2019,\u00a0\u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.strandbooks.com\/italian-3\/italian-easy-recipes-from-the-river-cafe\">Italian Easy: Recipes from the London River Cafe<\/a>\u2018]<\/li>\n<li>half a dozen\u00a0Maine cherry \u2018cocktail\u2019 tomatoes from Whole Foods, slow-roasted with a generous amount of dried Italian oregano from Buon Italia, olive oil, and two halved garlic cloves from Keith&#8217;s Farm<\/li>\n<li>young, tender, and mild rapini from Lani\u2019s\u00a0Farm,\u00a0wilted with two garlic halves, from Keith&#8217;s Farm,\u00a0which had\u00a0previously sweated a bit\u00a0in olive oil, the vegetable\u00a0then\u00a0seasoned with salt and pepper<\/li>\n<li>the wine was a California (Sonoma) white, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferrari-carano.com\/our-wines\/release\/2014-ferrari-carano-fume-blanc\">Ferrari-Carano Fum\u00e9 Blanc Sauvignon Blanc 2014<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the music was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkivmusic.com\/classical\/Name\/Mayra-Salinas\/Performer\/162212-2\">Hans\u00a0Pfitzner&#8217;s Sextet Op 55, performed by the Ulf Hoelscher Ensemble<\/a>, which was written in the summer of 1945, immediately after the war, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordsinternational.com\/cd.php?cd=03K05\">by one account<\/a>, &#8220;..while Pfitzner was homeless, in hospital for a broken arm and, like Richard Strauss also surveying the results of his loyalty to the Nazi regime, taking refuge in the Romanticism of the past.&#8221;; read the liner notes to the Ulf Hoelscher Ensemble recording, and also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Pfitzner\">this very sad Wikipedia entry<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1997\/07\/25\/arts\/gifted-but-obtuse-pfitzner-s-odd-lot.html?pagewanted=all\">Paul Griffith&#8217;s 1997 piece in the Times<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve not been able to find decent-size scallops at the Greenmarket this winter.
