For more on the delights and the use of this extraordinary, very Italian seasoning, see this\u00a0Honest-Food.net discussion\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/honest-food.net\/2010\/07\/25\/playing-with-fennel\/\">fennel in high summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As I write this I can still taste what the Wall Street Journal food writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702304692804577285582237631376\">called culinary\u00a0&#8216;fairy dust&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fresh bucatini pasta from Eataly (they&#8217;re sold in neat 1\/3-pound &#8216;nests&#8217;, and it seemed to me that two of them\u00a0would be inadequate if the dish\u00a0was\u00a0not going to include\u00a0any\u00a0other substantial ingredient, and that the\u00a0three\u00a0which I purchased\u00a0might be too much; I was right, so we ended up with enough to visit this\u00a0aromatic primi on another day), served with a simple sauce of olive oil heated slightly with one pretty seriously hot, but still described as\u00a0Italian, pepper (unusual in its maroon\u00a0color), from Oak Grove Plantation, then combined with one sliced red heirloom tomato from Berried Treasures, both fresh fennel seeds and fresh fennel pollen (from a generous-size bouquet of fennel flowers I had purchased from Lani&#8217;s Farm this week), and a bit of torn spearmint, also from Lani&#8217;s Farm<\/li>\n<li>the wine was an Italian (Umbria) white,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barberani.com\/\">Orvieto Classico Superiore Castagnolo Barberani 2014<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the music was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/silver-apples-of-the-moon-for-electronic-music-synthesizer-mw0000145769\">Morton Subotnik&#8217;s &#8216;The Wild Bull&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I never thought I&#8217;d find\u00a0the elusive ingredient, fresh fennel pollen, in my kitchen, but one of our creative local farmers made it possible this week.
