especially if there may be some lesson in it, for me at least &#8211; I&#8217;m tempted to share it. \u00a0For it to happen, of course, the picture also has to be presentable.<\/p>\n<p>I started out only wanting to put together a\u00a0quick meal\u00a0for the two of us, but the soup which resulted was even\u00a0more delicious than it deserved to be under the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>I know that I&#8217;m supposed to cook everything from scratch, and as much as possible with local ingredients, but this was just lunch. \u00a0Never underestimate the usefulness, or goodness, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knorr.com\/search\/soup\">Knorr leek\u00a0mix<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;ve had a soft spot for the company, <a href=\"http:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knorr_(Lebensmittelhersteller)\">founded in 1838<\/a> to make a coffee substitute, since I was living in Hanover in 1961. \u00a0I think part of my fascination with the rudimentary German supermarkets at the time might have been the discovery that there was such a thing as\u00a0Ersatzkaffee, but I&#8217;m not certain it was <a href=\"http:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Heinrich_Theodor_Knorr\">Carl Heinrich Theodor<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0product I knew then. \u00a0Today the Knorr brand is owned by Unilever. \u00a0I go for long stretches\u00a0not thinking about it, but\u00a0then I&#8217;ll \u00a0spot\u00a0the tidy icon in a store, and I melt just a bit. \u00a0I don&#8217;t know what I had in mind when I bought the firm&#8217;s leek mix packets perhaps a couple years ago, but the last one came in very handy today. \u00a0The fact that the dry mix tasted as good as it always does\/did probably helps explain it&#8217;s usefulness &#8211; and popularity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a package of Knorr &#8216;Leek recipe mix&#8217; I had found in the larder, simmered for five minutes and with two and a half\u00a0cups of chicken broth made with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterthanbouillon.com\/\">Better Than Bullion<\/a> chicken base (another kitchen savior, as are the company&#8217;s beef and vegetable versions), after which I added some wilted Golden Beet greens which I had left over from a dinner I made\u00a0three days before<\/li>\n<li>slices of\u00a0a crusty loaf of\u00a0Trucio from Sullivan Street Bakery<\/li>\n<li>the beverage was a cold pitcher of still New York tap water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rarely do I post\u00a0about lunch, mostly because we don&#8217;t usually make much of a deal about midday meals\u00a0at home, but when I assemble something out of leftovers and other things I might have on hand &#8211;
