But it started at one in the afternoon, and it was a Sunday, and it wasn&#8217;t simply eggs and toast, and it was shared with my best friend in all the world, and it lasted much longer than most breakfasts.\u00a0\u00a0 On the other hand, there were no mimosas. \u00a0We call this kind of occasional deviation from our\u00a0cereal and fruit routine a breakfast-which-means-we-now-don&#8217;t-have-to-have-lunch breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe it was actually a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/11\/opinion\/sunday\/brunch-is-for-jerks.html?module=Search&amp;mabReward=relbias%3As%2C%7B%221%22%3A%22RI%3A8%22%7D&amp;_r=0\">brunch<\/a>, even if there were no mimosas in sight and, except for our own conversation, it was pretty quiet in this\u00a0<em>breakfast<\/em> room, where the meal was accompanied by Haydn piano sonatas or some such classics.<\/p>\n<p>In the end it was only breakfast, and maybe it was also because I wasn&#8217;t totally awake yet,\u00a0but\u00a0it didn&#8217;t occur to me to snap a picture until long after we had finished making the toast\u00a0on Sunday, even if it was absolutely delicious, and included some unusual elements. \u00a0Later in the day\u00a0I realized that I could still post about it if \u00a0I found a sympathetic image on line which at least remotely related to our eggs, herbs, and near-bacon. \u00a0I looked, and decided to go with one of the most abstract egg-scapes I had\u00a0come across (and\u00a0not least because it was\u00a0one with which not everyone out there would be familiar).<\/p>\n<p>We did skip lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Even had\u00a0Barry not been sitting across from me, it was a very beautiful [br]unch table. \u00a0 Absent a photo document, you&#8217;ll have to take my word for the aesthetics of the eggs,\u00a0but it\u00a0should not take\u00a0a huge leap of faith, since eggs are notoriously photogenic even without any help.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>very fresh, organic eggs (of free-range hens) from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norwichmeadowsfarm.com\/\">Norwich Meadows Farm<\/a>,\u00a0fried in a enameled\u00a0cast iron pan until the whites had barely set, served with delicious\u00a0slices of\u00a0cured pork shoulder (\u2018bacon\u2019, but tasting more like a cross between bacon and corned beef) from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamarackhollowfarm.com\/\">Tamarack Hollow Farm<\/a>, barely heated above a low flame in the 12&#8243; cast iron super pan, and toasts of\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sullivanstreetbakery.com\/pane\">Sullivan Street Bakery&#8217;s sturdy Trucio Sar\u00e9<\/a>; the condiments on the table included a bit of the herb-lemon zest\u00a0sauce not used on <a href=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/2014\/10\/19\/herb-rubbed-swordfish-turnip-greens-tomato-salad\/\">the swordfish the night before<\/a>, now mixed with a bit of yellow\u00a0Thai pepper from Norwich Meadows Farm, and a small ramekin filled with chopped\u00a0fennel fronds from Norwich Meadows Farm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[image from <a href=\"http:\/\/jacindarussellart.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/eggs.htm\">Something Between Want and Desire<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eugen Wi\u0161kovsk\u00fd\u00a0Eggs\u00a01929 &nbsp; It was breakfast.
