The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sauerkraut\">Sauerkraut<\/a> came with turmeric, the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pellkartoffel\">Pellkartoffel<\/a> were mixed with some celery and a bit of serrano pepper, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bratwurst\">Bratwurst<\/a> was surprisingly spicy and almost sweet (even after all the time I&#8217;ve spent in Germany, my personal reference remains the uncooked <a href=\"https:\/\/honest-food.net\/sheboygan-bratwurst-recipe\/\">Sheboygan white brat<\/a> of my larger German-American family). Also, there was pickled okra!<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered that Germany is a big place, was once a <em>way<\/em>\u00a0<em>bigger<\/em> place, and is surprisingly cosmopolitan today; also, its hoary cooking traditions are tweaked, both inside and outside its borders, <em>sometimes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>four links (one pound) of <a href=\"https:\/\/shopmangalitsa.com\/pages\/mosefund-farm\">M\u00f8sefund<\/a>&#8216;s wonderful fully-cooked <a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2014\/03\/meet-mangalitsa-hairy-pig-thats-kobe-beef-pork\/\">mangalitsa pork<\/a> Bratwurst, purchased at the farm&#8217;s stand at the Saturday 23rd Street farmers market (they are normally set up there once a month), seared inside an enameled oval cast iron pan until blistered and heated through, served with a classic German mustard, <a href=\"https:\/\/store.mustardmuseum.com\/product\/3040\/german-mustards\">L\u00f6wensenf Medium<\/a><\/li>\n<li>ten or 12 ounces of really delicious Pinto (or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnnyseeds.com\/vegetables\/potatoes\/pinto-gold-potato-tubers-3282.html\">Pinto Gold<\/a>) new potatoes from Norwich Meadows Farm,\u00a0boiled with a generous amount of salt until barely cooked through, drained, halved, dried while inside the large, still-warm vintage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndga.net\/articles\/gmflameware.php\">Corning Pyrex Flameware glass pot<\/a> in which they had cooked, a tablespoon or so of butter added, plus half a cup of thinly-sliced celery from Neversink Organic Farm and a bit of chopped fresh green serrano pepper from Central Valley Farm, seasoned with sea salt, freshly-ground black pepper, garnished with chopped parsley from Keith&#8217;s Farm<\/li>\n<li>some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmtopeople.com\/products\/curry-sauerkraut\">Hawthorne Valley Turmeric Sauerkraut<\/a> from a jar I had selected, I would have to say, uncharacteristically, at their stall in the Greenmarket a while back, probably overcome by the entire stand&#8217;s aura of healthiness (also the color of the cabbage)<\/li>\n<li>pickled okra from Millport Dairy Farm, also in the Union Square Greenmarket<\/li>\n<li>the last slices of a\u00a0She Wolf Bakery miche that had been waiting in the bread box for just this occasion<\/li>\n<li>the wine was an Austrian (Lower Austria) red, <a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astorwines.com\/SearchResultsSingle.aspx?p=1&amp;search=25594&amp;searchtype=Contains\">Zweigelt, Erdenlied 2016<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">, from <\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astorwines.com\/\">Astor Wines<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the music was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Porpora-Germanico-Germania-3-CD\/dp\/B06XRKCKML\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1535342928&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=porpora+germanico&amp;dpID=516DBejmQAL&amp;preST=_SY300_QL70_&amp;dpSrc=srch&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=hoggardwagner-\">Nicola Porpora&#8217;s 1732 operatic masterpiece, &#8216;Germanico in Germania&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to write that this wasn&#8217;t a German meal.
