Last night\u00a0the air\u00a0was relatively\u00a0cool, and remembering that it&#8217;s\u00a0a recipe Barry likes to call &#8216;comfort food&#8217;, I decided to sneak it into the last week of July.<\/p>\n<p>There were potatoes,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13626\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/yellow_potatoes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and, in\u00a0a side dish more seasonal than the entr\u00e9e, excellent fennel,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13627\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/fennel_bulbs_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and some beautiful tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13628\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mixed_miniature_tomatoes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One 15-ounce\u00a0hake\u00a0fillet from American Pride Seafood in Chelsea\u2019s Down to Earth Farmers Market on 23rd Street, prepared accordingt to\u00a0a Mark Bittman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/05\/19\/dining\/the-minimalist-fish-on-a-bed-of-potatoes.html\">recipe<\/a>\u00a0I found in\u00a0the New York Times in 1999 [although I always use only about two thirds of the amount of olive oil it suggests], last night using\u00a0these other ingredients: &#8216;yellow potatoes from\u00a0from N.J. Jersey Farm Produce, Inc., also from the 23rd Street market; black oil-cured olives and 15 Sicilian bay leaves, both from Buon Italia<\/li>\n<li>one small fennel bulb from Alewife Farm, stems and fronds removed (the stems and most of the fronds kept for another use, some of the fronds set aside, sliced about one quarter of an inch thick crosswise, and 3\u00a0roughly-chopped fresh\u00a0spring shallots, also from Alewife Farm, one crushed section of a dried golden\/orange <a href=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/?s=habanada+pepper\">habanada pepper<\/a>,\u00a0and a teaspoon of Italian fennel seeds, saut\u00e9ed inside a heavy high-sided tin-lined copper pan over medium high heat until the fennel had just begun to color, the heat lowered, the pan covered, the vegetables cooked for another 4 or 5 minutes, the cover removed and 7 or 8 mixed multi-colored cherry and baby plum tomatoes from Eckerton Hill Farm, halved,\u00a0added, stirred, anad allowed to soften just a bit, the pan set aside until the hake was ready, divided onto the plates and garnished with the chopped fronds of the fennel<\/li>\n<li>the wine was a California (Andrus, in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta) white,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/us.nakedwines.com\/wines\/jacqueline-bahue-albarino-gomes-vineyard-2016.htm?cid=USA\">Jacqueline Bahue Albarino Gomes Vineyard California 2016<\/a>, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/us.nakedwines.com\/\">Naked Wines<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the music was the album, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alia-vox.com\/en\/catalogue\/henricus-isaac-2\/\">Henricus Isaac: Nel tempo di Lorenzo de Medici &amp; Maximilian I<\/a>&#8216;, music from the Medici and Austrian Habsburg courts, by the late 15th-century Flemish\u00a0composer, performed by Jordi Savall, La Capella Real de Catalunya, and Hesperion XXI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Normally this would not be a meal\u00a0we could enjoy in the summer, although it&#8217;s a meal we always enjoy a lot.
