More recently, in the case of particularly German versions, I&#8217;ve labelled them &#8216;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/?s=Picknick+\">Picknicks<\/a><\/em>&#8216;\u00a0on this blog. In fact, the appropriate German term would be &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brotzeit\"><em>Brotzeit<\/em><\/a>&#8216;, and that&#8217;s how I&#8217;ve described this one.<\/p>\n<p>The gorgeous lettuce included on the plate is a purple variety whose name was not indicated on the stand where I purchased it. The only lettuce image I snapped that afternoon was actually of a green version of the same breed, and at the time it just happened to be boasting\u00a0a single purple leaf from its neighbor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13083\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/lettuce.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>with the exception of the oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, butter, and confiture, the items included on the plate were essentially from local sources:\u00a0Blutwurst\u00a0or Zungenwurst, a variation of head cheese, from Schaller &amp; Weber; a dollop of\u00a0Italian (Asiago) Lingonberry Jam (a berry much like the German \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Preiselbeere\"><em>Preiselbeeren<\/em><\/a>\u2018) [not pictured]; purple lettuce from Norwich Meadows Farm, dressed with an Italian olive oil, Alce Nero DOP &#8216;Terra di Bari Bitonto&#8217;, from Eataly, an Italian white wine vinegar,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maioligourmand-shop.com\/acetaia-c-giaccone-aceto-cesare-bianco.html\">Aceto Cesare Bianco,<\/a>\u00a0from Buon Italia, Maldon salt, and freshly-ground Tellicherry pepper;\u00a0orange cherry tomatoes grown in\u00a0Ontario, from Whole Foods Market;\u00a0large red cherry tomatoes from Alex&#8217;s Tomato Farm; Isny Allg\u00e4u &#8216;Adel Egger&#8217; raw milk cheese, from Schaller &amp; Weber, and &#8216;Danby&#8221; goat cheese and &#8216;Rupert&#8217; cow cheese, both from Consider Bardwell Farm;\u00a02\u00a0<em>Rot-gebeizt<\/em>\u00a0pickled eggs from Millport Dairy Farm; slices of a\u00a0Balthazar rye boule from Schaller &amp; Weber, and \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/kerrygoldusa.com\/products?category=2\">Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter<\/a>\u2018 [not pictured]<\/li>\n<li>the wine was a German (Mosel) white,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weygandtmetzler.com\/weingut-axel-pauly\">Weingut Axel Pauly Trinkfluss 2014<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the music was the album, &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkivmusic.com\/classical\/album.jsp?album_id=206998\">The Palais-Royal<\/a>&#8216;, compositions\u00a0from the Paris palace and court of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippe_II,_Duke_of_Orl%C3%A9ans\">Phillip II, Duke of Orl\u00e9ans<\/a>, Regent during the long minority of Louis XV, and a composer himself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13090\" src=\"http:\/\/food.hoggardwagner.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/portrait-of-philippe-ii-duke-of-orleans-c1706-attributed-to-jean-baptiste-santerre-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Phillippe II, Duke of Orl\u00e9ans, detail of a 1706 portrait attributed to\u00a0Jean-Baptiste Santerre [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlinegalleries.com\/art-and-antiques\/detail\/portrait-of-philippe-ii-duke-of-orleans-c1706%3B-attributed-to-jean-baptiste-santerre\/241966\">image from Online Galleries<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barry and I\u00a0used to call meals like this &#8216;picnics&#8217;.
